019 – The Power of First Impressions: Unleashing the Potential of Professional Headshots

Shutter Speed Episode 019. Welcome to our channel! I’m thrilled to have you here today because we’ll dive deep into the power of first impressions and how they can unleash your potential. Specifically, we’ll explore the incredible impact professional headshots can have on your personal and professional life.

I’m Peter Szpakowski, and welcome to the ‘Shutter Speed’ Where a powerful first impression can change your life. I have been a branding specialist for over 15 years. For those 15 years, I have been a professional photographer and videographer.   I travel around the country taking professional headshots, professional event photography, and professional video of individuals and businesses that promote business and careers. This podcast focuses on a business owner, entrepreneur, or even someone looking to enhance their career, life, and place in this world through branding. For most of us today, the first impression people have of you is through an image or video. And that will determine if there will even be another interaction after that first impression. This podcast is tailor-made for you. In each episode, we’ll uncover the strategies and techniques behind building a solid, influential brand that resonates with your target audience.

Branding is more than just a logo or a tagline. It’s the essence of your business or personal brand, the emotional connection you create with your customers or employers. (This is where you add more information.)

Suppose you are interested in professional headshots, portraits, or videography. Reach out to me. I travel for on-location headshots, event photography, and creating videos to promote your business or brand. Reach out to me. You can visit 2mmheadshots.com. If you have a specific requirement or question for the show and you want to submit those to me, you can visit 2mmheadshots.com/podcast. I have information about my services and a form where you can submit questions to this podcast. Information on scheduling in the studio is also available at that site.

So about the questions. I want this podcast to be helpful for anybody that wants to know more about branding. I specialize in visual branding and copy. I will cover these topics here, but most will be around using imagery and videography. Future topics I have scheduled are what you should wear for a headshot session and how I can use branding to advance my career. How can I use branding to advance my acting career real estate career? Any other topic you can think of I would be happy to discuss and answer on here. Just head over to 2mmheadshots.com/podcast

So for today’s topic. Up until 2015, I was mainly a portrait and physique photographer. I was one of those photographers at bodybuilding and fitness shows, taking pictures for magazines like Flex, Muscle and Fitness, and muscular development. But around 2015, I wanted to branch out to something more. I love to help people. I love lifting people and helping them be the best they can be. Ever since I was a teenager, I wanted to be the next Tony Robbins. It was only natural for me to be drawn to professional headshots. So many headshots were so bad. They are still wrong. Want proof? I just got to LinkedIn and looked up CEO headshots. Most of them are terrible. They are old school. The person looks uncomfortable. They look like people I absolutely would never want to do business with. So I knew I could do better. I researched what I could do, and I found great mentors. Mentors that are the best in the industry. So today, we dive deeper into the potential of professional headshots, which has been my primary focus for almost ten years.

In this digital age, where connections are made with just a click, it’s more important than ever to understand the significance of your online presence. Your headshot is often the first glimpse people get of you, whether it’s on your LinkedIn profile, your website, or even in your email signature. That split second can make all the difference between grabbing someone’s attention or being passed over.

Think about it. When scrolling through a page full of profiles or searching for potential collaborators, what catches your eye? It’s those beautiful headshots that make you pause that make you want to learn more about the person behind the photo. For women, it could be a well-lit photo where you have a warm, welcoming glow, or for men, that may have slight shadows to make an image more mysterious.

What to Wear for Your Professional Headshot: Tips and Tricks for a Great Shot

In today’s job market, having a high-quality headshot is crucial as it can be the initial impression you make on potential employers, clients, or colleagues. Whether you’re using it on social media, your company’s website, or a conference brochure, it’s vital to dress appropriately for the situation and present yourself as a professional and well-groomed individual. This article provides tips and advice on what to wear for your professional headshot so that you can get the perfect shot.

Why is what you wear essential in a professional headshot?

When it comes to how others perceive you, your headshot plays a crucial role. It is important that it reflects your competence and confidence in your field. To achieve this impression, dressing appropriately is essential. Choosing the right attire for your headshot is crucial in representing your brand for social media and business cards. Make sure to select clothing that fits well and complements your skin tone.

Tips on What to Wear for your professional headshot

Avoid Bold Prints (What to Wear For A Headshot)

In the past, wearing a tie to work was considered a necessary part of being a professional. However, now it’s more important to dress according to the standards of your industry. If it’s acceptable, you can skip the tie. It’s crucial to dress appropriately for your field of work as each industry has its own dress code. For instance, if you work in finance, wearing a suit would be appropriate, while something more casual might be acceptable in the creative field.

You Are The Focus When Choosing What To Wear For A Headshot

During your headshot session, the focus should be on you, not your clothes. It is important to avoid bold, distracting prints and instead opt for solid colors that complement your skin tone. While it’s important to show off your personality, patterns and bright colors can be distracting and take away from your overall appearance. Therefore, it is best to keep your outfit simple and understated.

Want To Look Thinner In Your Headshot?

Most people prefer to appear slim in their headshots. To avoid looking larger than you actually are, it’s best to avoid wearing an ill-fitted jacket or one with overly large shoulder pads. Taking care of small details can also make a big difference, such as ensuring your clothes are clean and ironed, and making sure your tie is straight and your collar is free of wrinkles.

    Accessorize Appropriately For Your Headshot

Accessories can add personality to your headshot, but avoiding anything too distracting or trendy is crucial. Opt for timeless accessories such as a simple necklace or classic earrings. Keep the jewelry to a minimum. Stud earrings are acceptable, and if you feel you must wear a necklace, go with something structured like a pearl. Just keep it short so that it doesn’t intersect with the neckline of your top.

Fake Eye Lashes For A Headshot?

Over the past five years, there have been significant improvements in the world of eyelashes. I would have advised against using eyelashes in headshots in the past, but it now depends on the situation. If done by a professional and not too excessive, eyelashes can be acceptable. I suggest using small to medium-thick eyelashes for headshots that show a lot of detail and are zoomed in. If the lashes are too long or thick, they can appear to have two rows of lashes. However, if necessary, I can always enhance the lashes during editing.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring any props or accessories that will enhance your headshots. Make sure to get plenty of rest the night before and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Once you have selected the images, the photographer will edit them and provide you with the final product. Remember that the images you choose will be one of the most critical components of your acting portfolio, so take your time and choose wisely. Don’t rush the process and consider your options carefully. Your headshots represent you and your brand, so make sure they reflect the best version of yourself.

Their expertise in capturing the perfect lighting, angles, and expressions will significantly affect the final results. Look for a photographer who understands your brand identity and can tailor their approach accordingly.

    2. Plan the Aesthetics

Discuss the desired outcome and style with your photographer to ensure the headshots align with your brand identity. Consider factors such as attire, background, and props. For a consistent look, having all staff members images in the same setting is good. I take so many headshots of people where the style looks like it has come from the 80’s. If this is your business consider having all upgrade to a modern style. Having an old style can have negative consiquesnces on your strategy.

    3. Encourage Authentic Expressions

Authenticity is key. Encourage your employees to relax and be themselves during the photo session. Genuine smiles and natural expressions will help convey approachability and warmth. Avoid overly posed or stiff poses that may come across as fake.

    4. Pay Attention to Lighting

Lighting plays a significant role in creating great headshots. Natural light or well-controlled studio lighting can enhance the overall quality of the photographs. Harsh shadows or uneven lighting should be avoided as they distract from the subject. Above all consult with your photographer to achieve the ideal lighting setup.

    5. Dress Professionally

Choosing the proper attire is crucial in your images. Advise your employees to dress in a way that aligns with your company’s dress code and industry standards. For example neat, fitted clothing in solid colors often works best, helping the focus remain on the person’s face.

    6. Optimize Composition

Composition is how the elements within the photograph are arranged. Ensure the face is the main focal point, with enough negative space around it. Above all a balanced and pleasing composition will draw the viewer’s attention directly to the individual.

    7. Use Props Sparingly in Staff Headshots

While props can add interest and personality to a staff headshot, they should be used rarely. Props should complement the persons role or the company’s brand identity. Above all be mindful that the props do not distract from the person in the photograph.

    8. Capture Different Perspectives

Consider photographs from different angles and perspectives to add variety and depth to your images. For example experiment with different camera heights, tilts, and focal lengths to create a dynamic and visually appealing collection.

    9. Retouch with Care

Post-processing and retouching will enhance the final look, but it should be done with consistency and care. Avoid over retouching that alters the natural appearance. For example minor adjustments to lighting, color balance, and blemish removal can ensure a professional result.

    10. Update Staff Headshots Regularly

Staff headshots should be updated to reflect appearance changes or keep the visual consistent with the current brand. Above all New hires or promotions should have their images taken right away to maintain a cohesive and up-to-date gallery of staff images. Following these tips ensures that your headshots showcase your unique personality, professionalism, and talent.

    What are Stage Headshots?

As an actor, headshots for stage productions are essential promotional materials. These photographs serve various purposes, such as casting calls and social media profiles. Usually captured in a studio or on location, stage headshots emphasize an actor’s unique attributes and talents. They are a vital aspect of an actor’s marketing strategy.

    Why are Stage Headshots Important?

Stage headshots are vital because they are often the first thing a casting director or producer will see when considering an actor for a role. A good headshot can make all the difference in whether or not you get called in for an audition. It’s essential to ensure that your headshot accurately represents who you are and what you can do as an actor.

How to Prepare for Your Stage Headshot Session

Preparing for your stage headshot session is as important as the shoot itself. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

    Choose the Right Photographer

If you’re looking for outstanding headshots, it’s essential to find the right photographer who specializes in headshots and has experience working with actors. Make sure to ask for their portfolio to get a feel for their unique style and the quality of their work.

    Choose Your Outfits

When selecting outfits for a photo shoot, keep in mind that less is often more. Choose solid colors instead of busy patterns or logos, and bring multiple options to mix and match. This gives you more flexibility and ensures a range of looks to choose from. Also, experiment with different accessories or makeup looks to create a unique style that expresses your personality. Remember, the goal is to have fun!

    Get Plenty of Rest

    Stick to Solid Colors

When choosing a color for your headshots, it’s important to keep in mind that solid colors are a safe and effective choice. These colors help draw attention to the face and minimize any distracting patterns or designs. It’s crucial to consider the overall aesthetic you’re trying to achieve and choose a color that complements it. Additionally, it’s worth noting that bright colors, like neon, should generally be avoided as they can be overwhelming and divert attention away from the face. Avoid Busy Patterns or Logos

For a photo shoot or video call, it’s recommended to opt for solid colors or simple patterns as busy patterns can be distracting and take away from your face. It’s also crucial to consider the background and lighting to ensure your outfit complements the setting. Keep in mind that your clothing is meant to enhance your appearance, not detract from it.

    Dress for Your Type

Dress to reflect your personality and the roles you’re interested in. If you’re a romantic lead, wear something soft and feminine. If you’re a tough guy, wear something edgy and masculine.

Ensure you like the photographer’s style and that it fits the image you want to project.

Your social media profiles are a great place to showcase your images. Consider using them as your profile picture or cover photo on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter platforms.

    Resumes and Cover Letters

If you’re applying for jobs, consider including your image in your resume or cover letter. This can help potential employers remember you and put a face to your name. People use them on LinkedIn so why not you resume. In fact people that have a professional image are 14 times more likely to get clicks or views.

    Business Websites

Consider using your images on your About, team, or Contact pages if you have a business website. This can help humanize your brand and make it more relatable to potential customers.

    Marketing Materials

Headshots can also be used in marketing materials, such as brochures, flyers, or business cards. They can help establish your brand identity and make it more memorable.

    Headshots FAQs

How often should I update my headshots?

It’s a good idea to update your headshots every few years or whenever there is a significant change in your appearance, such as a new hairstyle or weight loss/gain. Regularly updating your images can help ensure they accurately represent you, modern trends, and your current brand.

Can I use a selfie as a headshot?

Selfies can be a convenient way to take pictures, but they may need to be more suitable for professional or formal settings. It’s best to use high-quality, well-lit, professionally taken to make a strong impression on potential employers or clients.

Should I smile in my headshots?

It depends on the message you want to convey through your images. A genuine smile can make you appear approachable and friendly, while a more severe or neutral expression can convey professionalism and confidence. Consider your brand and the message you want to send before deciding on your facial expression.

    Can I edit my headshots?

While minor touch-ups, such as removing blemishes or brightening the lighting, are acceptable, it’s essential not to over-edit your headshots. Your headshots should still look like you, and overly airbrushed or edited images can appear fake and unprofessional.

How do I choose the best headshot for my needs?

When selecting images for your branding, consider your brand and audience. Choose images that convey your personality and message while appropriate for your industry or audience.

What should I do to prepare for my headshot session?

To prepare for your headshot session, choose your outfit and makeup beforehand and practice your posing and facial expressions in front of a mirror. Ensure to arrive early to the shoot and bring any necessary props or accessories.
