019 – The Power of First Impressions: Unleashing the Potential of Professional Headshots
019 – The Power of First Impressions: Unleashing the Potential of Professional Headshots
Shutter Speed Episode 019. Welcome to our channel! I’m thrilled to have you here today because we’ll dive deep into the power of first impressions and how they can unleash your potential. Specifically, we’ll explore the incredible impact professional headshots can have on your personal and professional life.
I’m Peter Szpakowski, and welcome to the ‘Shutter Speed’ Where a powerful first impression can change your life. I have been a branding specialist for over 15 years. For those 15 years, I have been a professional photographer and videographer. I travel around the country taking professional headshots, professional event photography, and professional video of individuals and businesses that promote business and careers. This podcast focuses on a business owner, entrepreneur, or even someone looking to enhance their career, life, and place in this world through branding. For most of us today, the first impression people have of you is through an image or video. And that will determine if there will even be another interaction after that first impression. This podcast is tailor-made for you. In each episode, we’ll uncover the strategies and techniques behind building a solid, influential brand that resonates with your target audience.
Branding is more than just a logo or a tagline. It’s the essence of your business or personal brand, the emotional connection you create with your customers or employers. (This is where you add more information.)
Suppose you are interested in professional headshots, portraits, or videography. Reach out to me. I travel for on-location headshots, event photography, and creating videos to promote your business or brand. Reach out to me. You can visit 2mmheadshots.com. If you have a specific requirement or question for the show and you want to submit those to me, you can visit 2mmheadshots.com/podcast. I have information about my services and a form where you can submit questions to this podcast. Information on scheduling in the studio is also available at that site.
So about the questions. I want this podcast to be helpful for anybody that wants to know more about branding. I specialize in visual branding and copy. I will cover these topics here, but most will be around using imagery and videography. Future topics I have scheduled are what you should wear for a headshot session and how I can use branding to advance my career. How can I use branding to advance my acting career real estate career? Any other topic you can think of I would be happy to discuss and answer on here. Just head over to 2mmheadshots.com/podcast
So for today’s topic. Up until 2015, I was mainly a portrait and physique photographer. I was one of those photographers at bodybuilding and fitness shows, taking pictures for magazines like Flex, Muscle and Fitness, and muscular development. But around 2015, I wanted to branch out to something more. I love to help people. I love lifting people and helping them be the best they can be. Ever since I was a teenager, I wanted to be the next Tony Robbins. It was only natural for me to be drawn to professional headshots. So many headshots were so bad. They are still wrong. Want proof? I just got to LinkedIn and looked up CEO headshots. Most of them are terrible. They are old school. The person looks uncomfortable. They look like people I absolutely would never want to do business with. So I knew I could do better. I researched what I could do, and I found great mentors. Mentors that are the best in the industry. So today, we dive deeper into the potential of professional headshots, which has been my primary focus for almost ten years.
In this digital age, where connections are made with just a click, it’s more important than ever to understand the significance of your online presence. Your headshot is often the first glimpse people get of you, whether it’s on your LinkedIn profile, your website, or even in your email signature. That split second can make all the difference between grabbing someone’s attention or being passed over.
Think about it. When scrolling through a page full of profiles or searching for potential collaborators, what catches your eye? It’s those beautiful headshots that make you pause that make you want to learn more about the person behind the photo. For women, it could be a well-lit photo where you have a warm, welcoming glow, or for men, that may have slight shadows to make an image more mysterious.

What to Wear for Your Professional Headshot: Tips and Tricks for a Great Shot
In today’s job market, having a high-quality headshot is crucial as it can be the initial impression you make on potential employers, clients, or colleagues. Whether you’re using it on social media, your company’s website, or a conference brochure, it’s vital to dress appropriately for the situation and present yourself as a professional and well-groomed individual. This article provides tips and advice on what to wear for your professional headshot so that you can get the perfect shot.
Why is what you wear essential in a professional headshot?
When it comes to how others perceive you, your headshot plays a crucial role. It is important that it reflects your competence and confidence in your field. To achieve this impression, dressing appropriately is essential. Choosing the right attire for your headshot is crucial in representing your brand for social media and business cards. Make sure to select clothing that fits well and complements your skin tone.

Tips on What to Wear for your professional headshot
Avoid Bold Prints (What to Wear For A Headshot)
In the past, wearing a tie to work was considered a necessary part of being a professional. However, now it’s more important to dress according to the standards of your industry. If it’s acceptable, you can skip the tie. It’s crucial to dress appropriately for your field of work as each industry has its own dress code. For instance, if you work in finance, wearing a suit would be appropriate, while something more casual might be acceptable in the creative field.
You Are The Focus When Choosing What To Wear For A Headshot
During your headshot session, the focus should be on you, not your clothes. It is important to avoid bold, distracting prints and instead opt for solid colors that complement your skin tone. While it’s important to show off your personality, patterns and bright colors can be distracting and take away from your overall appearance. Therefore, it is best to keep your outfit simple and understated.
Timeless Styles for Timeless Headshots
Choose classic styles for your headshot to ensure it remains timeless and updated.
Want To Look Thinner In Your Headshot?
Most people prefer to appear slim in their headshots. To avoid looking larger than you actually are, it’s best to avoid wearing an ill-fitted jacket or one with overly large shoulder pads. Taking care of small details can also make a big difference, such as ensuring your clothes are clean and ironed, and making sure your tie is straight and your collar is free of wrinkles.
Accessorize Appropriately For Your Headshot
Accessories can add personality to your headshot, but avoiding anything too distracting or trendy is crucial. Opt for timeless accessories such as a simple necklace or classic earrings. Keep the jewelry to a minimum. Stud earrings are acceptable, and if you feel you must wear a necklace, go with something structured like a pearl. Just keep it short so that it doesn’t intersect with the neckline of your top.
Fake Eye Lashes For A Headshot?
Over the past five years, there have been significant improvements in the world of eyelashes. I would have advised against using eyelashes in headshots in the past, but it now depends on the situation. If done by a professional and not too excessive, eyelashes can be acceptable. I suggest using small to medium-thick eyelashes for headshots that show a lot of detail and are zoomed in. If the lashes are too long or thick, they can appear to have two rows of lashes. However, if necessary, I can always enhance the lashes during editing.
FAQs On What To Wear For Your Headshot Session
Can I wear glasses in my professional headshot?Yes, you can wear glasses, but make sure they’re clean and don’t reflect light.
Should I wear a tie in my professional headshot? It depends on your industry. If you work in a corporate setting, a tie might be appropriate. If you’re in a creative field, you can skip the tie.
Can I wear makeup in my professional headshot? You can wear makeup, but keep it natural and straightforward.
What should I do with my hair in my professional headshot?Your hair should be neat. Avoid any extreme hairstyles or colors.
Can I wear Jewelry For My Headshot? You can wear jewelry but remember you are the point of interest. Having too much or too large of jewelry can be distracting in a headshot. A photographer may ask you to remove the jewelry for a different look but wear what brings out your personality.
What should I wear for an Acting HeadshotWhat type of role are you trying to acquire? I would use the type of clothes that your character would play. Funny go with lighter, brighter clothes; evil people go with dark clothes; laid back go with business casual. As you research your role, pay attention to the person’s style and bring those outfits to the headshot session.
Conclusion:

In today’s business world, having a professional headshot is crucial. It not only showcases your personal brand but also reflects your trustworthiness, credibility, and dedication to your profession. A well-done headshot can make a lasting impression on potential clients and business partners. Therefore, it’s essential to invest in a high-quality headshot that accurately represents your professional image. With a little effort, you can establish your reputation and build trust with your audience, which can take you far in your career.
Standing Out From The Competition
Investing in a high-quality headshot is an investment in your personal brand that can help you stand out in a sea of competitors. A great headshot can set you apart in competitive industries, making a memorable impression. A professional photographer can assist you in capturing the perfect shot, highlighting your unique qualities and personality.
How to Choose the Right Headshot Photographer
Selecting the right headshot photographer is a crucial decision that can greatly impact the outcome of your photos. Here are some essential factors to consider when making your choice:
Define Your Purpose and Style Before you start your search for a headshot photographer, it’s important to define your purpose and the style you want to achieve. Ask yourself questions such as:
- What is the intended use of the headshot?
- What kind of image do you want to project?
- Are you aiming for a traditional or contemporary look?
- Do you prefer indoor or outdoor settings?
- Are you looking for a specific mood or atmosphere?
Answering these questions will help you narrow your options and find a photographer whose style aligns with your vision.
Research and Review Portfolios
Once you have a clear idea of your purpose and style, it’s time to start researching headshot photographers in your area. Look for photographers who specialize in headshots and have a strong portfolio showcasing their work. For example review their online galleries or social media profiles to understand their style, technical skills, and ability to capture their subjects’ unique qualities.
Read Client Testimonials and Reviews
Client testimonials and reviews provide valuable insights into the photographer’s skill, communication skills, and ability to make their clients feel comfortable. For example read through reviews on their website or review work to gauge their reputation and see if their previous clients were satisfied with their services.
Consider Experience and Specialization
Experience plays a vital role in the quality of headshots. Look for photographers with a proven track record and extensive experience capturing headshots. For example consider their specialization as well—some photographers may specialize in corporate headshots. Others may excel in capturing the essence of actors or models. Above all choose a photographer whose expertise aligns with your specific needs.
Evaluate Technical Skills and Equipment
A skilled headshot photographer possesses technical expertise in light, composition, and posing techniques. Assess their ability to create flattering light setups, use professional equipment, and guide you through different poses to capture your best angles. Above all look for photographers who show attention to detail and have a keen eye for composition.
Schedule a Consultation
Before you decide, you should schedule a consultation with your potential headshot photographer. This meeting allows you to discuss your vision, ask questions, and understand your personality and professionalism. I suggest a consultation because it lets you see if you have good chemistry and feel comfortable working with them.
Discuss Pricing and Packages
During the consultation, inquire about the photographer’s pricing and packages. Understanding the cost and what is included in each package will help you make an informed decision. Consider factors such as the number of final edited photos, retouch services, and usage rights. Above all remember that investing in a high-quality headshot is an investment in your professional image and should be treated as such.
A Headshot is your digital handshake… What does yours say about you?
Assess Communication and Reliability
Effective communication is crucial throughout the process of working with a headshot photographer. Assess their responsiveness to your questions, ability to understand and accommodate your needs, and reliability in meeting deadlines. Above all a photographer who is attentive, transparent, and communicates clearly will help ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
Consider Recommendations and Referrals
Word-of-mouth recommendations and referrals can be invaluable when selecting a headshot photographer. Contact colleagues, friends, or industry professionals with headshots taken and ask for their suggestions. For example their personal experiences can guide you toward finding a reputable and talented photographer.
Trust Your Instincts
Ultimately, trust your feelings when you choose a headshot photographer. If something feels off or you have negative thoughts, listening to those feelings is a must. Above all your headshot reflects yourself, and you deserve to work with a photographer who understands your vision and makes you feel comfortable and confident.

If you’re an aspiring actor hoping to succeed in the industry, having a headshot is crucial for catching the right people’s attention. To showcase your individuality and emphasize your best qualities, it’s important to have a distinctive headshot. During a headshot session, a photographer will take various shots with different poses, outfits, and backgrounds. It’s advisable to have at least two types of headshots: a commercial and a theatrical headshot. To prepare for your headshots, you should get enough rest and stay hydrated, get a haircut a few days before the shoot, and avoid drastic changes to your appearance. Following these tips ensures that your actor headshots reflect your unique personality, professionalism, and talent. A great headshot can lead to an audition, ultimately resulting in a job offer – so it’s vital to make a good impression!
The Importance of Actor Headshots
If you’re an aspiring actor, a captivating headshot that catches the attention of the right people is essential. A high-quality headshot can highlight your personality and showcase your best qualities, paving the way for auditions and job opportunities. It’s the first step towards establishing yourself in the industry, so a headshot is a must-have if you want to succeed in acting. In addition, it’s crucial to select the right photographer, wardrobe, and makeup to guarantee that your headshot is professional and presents you in the best possible light. Taking the time and effort to produce a remarkable headshot can set you apart from other aspiring actors and improve your chances of landing the roles you desire.
Types of Actor Headshots, Stage Headshots, Theatre Headshots.
If you’re an aspiring actor looking to make it big in the industry, it’s important to know that there are two main types of headshots: commercial and theatrical. Commercial headshots are typically used for advertisements and feature a friendly, approachable demeanor with a smile. Meanwhile, theatrical headshots are used for TV shows, films, and stage productions and typically feature a more dramatic, character-focused look. Having at least two types of headshots is recommended to showcase your unique personality, professionalism, and talent in the industry.
What to Wear?
When preparing for your headshot, choosing clothing that enhances your skin tone and eye color and accentuating your best features is important. It is recommended to select solid colors and avoid complex patterns or logos. Women should avoid sleeveless tops and revealing necklines, while men should avoid ties with intricate designs. Also, consider the style and tone of the photo shoot. For a corporate headshot, stick to more professional attire, while a creative or casual shoot may allow for more personality in your clothing choices. Experiment with different options and don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from the photographer. Remember, your headshot is often the first impression you make, so take the time to make it count.
How to Choose a Photographer?
Are you looking to take your acting career to the next level? Choosing the right photographer for your headshots is critical to showcasing your unique personality and professionalism. Look for a photographer who specializes in actor headshots, has experience working with actors, and has a good reputation. Additionally, it’s recommended to request referrals and review the photographer’s portfolio before scheduling a session. This way, you can ensure that you find the best photographer who understands the industry and can capture your distinct personality.
How to Prepare for an Actor Headshot Session?
To get the best results during your headshot session, it’s important to prepare ahead of time. Start by getting plenty of rest and staying hydrated. Get a haircut a few days before the shoot and avoid any drastic changes in your appearance. Be sure to choose your outfits carefully, making sure they are clean and wrinkle-free. To top it off, practice your facial expressions and poses in front of a mirror.
What Happens During an Actor Headshot Session?
During your headshot session, the photographer will take various shots with different poses, outfits, and backgrounds. They will guide you on how to pose and which expressions to make, so it’s important to communicate your preferences with them. The session typically lasts for a few hours, and hundreds of shots will be taken. Relax and have fun, trusting the photographer to capture your unique personality, professionalism, and talent. Wear comfortable clothing and bring any props or accessories that will enhance your headshots. Make sure to get plenty of rest the night before and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. It’s also a good idea to have a light snack before the session to keep your energy up. Lastly, review the photographer’s portfolio beforehand to ensure their style aligns with your vision for your headshots.
What to Expect After an Actor Headshot Session?
After your headshot session, you will receive the images from the photographer. Choosing the best images that showcase your personality, professionalism, and talent is crucial. Before making a final decision, it is recommended to seek feedback from your agent or acting coach. Once you have selected the images, the photographer will edit them and provide you with the final product. Remember that the images you choose will be one of the most critical components of your acting portfolio, so take your time and choose wisely. Don’t rush the process and consider your options carefully. Your headshots represent you and your brand, so make sure they reflect the best version of yourself.
How to Use Actor Headshots

Professionalism is a key trait that clients and customers look for in the businesses they choose to engage with. Staff headshots that exude quality can help establish an immediate sense of trust. Above all by presenting employees in a quality and professional manner, businesses show their commitment to excellence.
Reflecting Brand Identity
Staff headshots should align with a business’s brand identity and core values. Consistency in visual is must to create a unified and coherent brand image. From attire and backgrounds to lighting and composition, every element should reflect the brand’s personality and industry.
Employee Recognition and Engagement
Staff headshots are about making a positive impression on audiences and playing a vital role in creating employee recognition and engagement. Employees feel valued when they see their portraits featured on company media. Above all this simple act can boost employee morale, encourage a sense of belonging, and enhance team spirit.
Tips for Creating Impactful Staff Headshots
Creating impactful staff headshots requires careful several elements. Here are some tips to help you capture the essence of professionalism and personality:
1. Choose the Right Photographer for Staff Headshots
Investing in a professional photographer who specializes in corporate photography is crucial. Their expertise in capturing the perfect lighting, angles, and expressions will significantly affect the final results. Look for a photographer who understands your brand identity and can tailor their approach accordingly.
2. Plan the Aesthetics
Discuss the desired outcome and style with your photographer to ensure the headshots align with your brand identity. Consider factors such as attire, background, and props. For a consistent look, having all staff members images in the same setting is good. I take so many headshots of people where the style looks like it has come from the 80’s. If this is your business consider having all upgrade to a modern style. Having an old style can have negative consiquesnces on your strategy.
3. Encourage Authentic Expressions
Authenticity is key. Encourage your employees to relax and be themselves during the photo session. Genuine smiles and natural expressions will help convey approachability and warmth. Avoid overly posed or stiff poses that may come across as fake.
4. Pay Attention to Lighting
Lighting plays a significant role in creating great headshots. Natural light or well-controlled studio lighting can enhance the overall quality of the photographs. Harsh shadows or uneven lighting should be avoided as they distract from the subject. Above all consult with your photographer to achieve the ideal lighting setup.
5. Dress Professionally
Choosing the proper attire is crucial in your images. Advise your employees to dress in a way that aligns with your company’s dress code and industry standards. For example neat, fitted clothing in solid colors often works best, helping the focus remain on the person’s face.
6. Optimize Composition
Composition is how the elements within the photograph are arranged. Ensure the face is the main focal point, with enough negative space around it. Above all a balanced and pleasing composition will draw the viewer’s attention directly to the individual.
7. Use Props Sparingly in Staff Headshots
While props can add interest and personality to a staff headshot, they should be used rarely. Props should complement the persons role or the company’s brand identity. Above all be mindful that the props do not distract from the person in the photograph.
8. Capture Different Perspectives
Consider photographs from different angles and perspectives to add variety and depth to your images. For example experiment with different camera heights, tilts, and focal lengths to create a dynamic and visually appealing collection.
9. Retouch with Care
Post-processing and retouching will enhance the final look, but it should be done with consistency and care. Avoid over retouching that alters the natural appearance. For example minor adjustments to lighting, color balance, and blemish removal can ensure a professional result.
10. Update Staff Headshots Regularly
Staff headshots should be updated to reflect appearance changes or keep the visual consistent with the current brand. Above all New hires or promotions should have their images taken right away to maintain a cohesive and up-to-date gallery of staff images. I offer retainers to take new team members headshots to keep the look consistent.
